Meades Eats Fast Food

Originally broadcast by BBC2 on 24th February, 2003

"Fast food is the noxious stench which defines our era. It is our tallow, our coal gas, our sewage. And it’s about as fragrant as coal gas, about as enticing as the sewage it will become."

You can always rely on the formerly roly-poly, formerly Times restaurant critic Jonathan Meades to stick the verbal boot in when he believes that he has just cause. So begins his three part series looking at the relationship between the British and their food. With his deadpan delivery and multi-layered, multi-faceted argument he lays into the origins of what the British call fast food; and then on to how we eat it, why we eat it, and what goes into it. Of course none of us are ever going to take heed of what Meades has to say - we're far too attached to our burger and chips for that - but he does say it in such a unique way.
